“Tolstoy Sadik is the best childcare that we attend. Both my sons -David and Daniel – were students of this amazing daycare.  

All teachers there are very kind, careful, professional, and love children very much. All of them are brilliant ! Both my kids were delighted  to go there. They love to play and study, learn new subjects. All classes were very interesting , teachers were prepared. There are many  additional activities, like yoga, theatre  and music. They had Russian language class there and both of them can read and write simple words in Russian.Day care is very clean, all personnel very care about kids safety, kids health. 

The owner, Xenia, an amazing and kind woman, cooked food for kids every day. My children love this homemade breakfast and lunch from daycare . They both asked me to learn to cook like ,,Xenia food” when they are at home.

Day care has its own playground with many activities. that kids can enjoy.

Tolstoy Sadik is not just an average daycare — it’s a second home for children, where they receive real care and love from a team of wonderful caregivers, and form friendships that last for many years after they graduate and move on to school.

Children are provided with healthy, balanced meals, plenty of fresh air and exercise, and enriching classes in painting, reading, yoga, and more. There’s also a quiet hour each day, giving them time to rest, relax, and support their well-being.

Tolstoy Sadik offers a unique opportunity to immerse children in the Russian language. We had struggled to teach our daughter Russian, but after just two weeks at Tolstoy Sadik, she began speaking more fluently and brought home phrases and sentences that delighted us. Now she speaks both Russian and English with equal ease.

Толстой садик — это не просто обычный детский сад, а настоящий второй дом для детей, где их окружают заботой и любовью замечательные воспитатели, а также завязываются дружбы, которые сохраняются на многие годы после выпуска и поступления в школу.

Детям предоставляют полноценное здоровое питание, прогулки на свежем воздухе, занятия живописью, чтением, йогой и многим другим. В середине дня предусмотрен час отдыха, чтобы дети могли успокоиться, расслабиться и укрепить здоровье.

Толстой садик даёт уникальную возможность погружения в русскую языковую среду. Нам было трудно научить нашу дочку говорить по-русски, но всего через две недели в садике она начала говорить свободнее и приносить домой фразы и предложения, которые нас радовали. Сейчас она с лёгкостью говорит как по-русски, так и по-английски.

Дружба, которую мы завели с другими родителями в садике, живёт до сих пор. Наши дети продолжают встречаться и играть вместе, а мы наслаждаемся общением с их родителями — нашими новыми друзьями.  Andre & Marina Zuban

Enrolling Yulia in the Sadik has been one of the best decisions we’ve made for her education. The level of care, joy, and educational quality is truly exceptional, even with the long commute from our home in Northwest DC.

Every day, I’m impressed by the homework she brings home, and we can clearly see her growth — not only academically, but also in her maturity, manners, artistic expression, music, theatre, and even yoga.

What initially drew us in was the Russian immersion program, and thanks to the excellent teaching, Yulia now speaks fluent, native-level Russian.

Мне кажется, таких детских садов почти не осталось — или их очень мало. Наш внук ходил в Толстовский садик до школы, и даже сейчас, став школьником, часто просит отвести его туда хотя бы на денёк. Это, пожалуй, лучший показатель того, насколько уютно и счастливо ребёнку было в этом месте. Профессиональный и по-настоящему любящий подход к детям чувствуется во всём: от внимательного отношения воспитателей до продуманной развивающей программы, которая строится на игровой форме и уважении к личности ребёнка. Каждый день — как маленькое приключение, наполненное новыми знаниями, открытиями и радостью общения. Отдельного упоминания заслуживает питание: еда домашняя, свежая, приготовленная с заботой из натуральных продуктов. На перекус — фрукты и овощи, что, согласитесь, редкость для детсадов. Но главное — это атмосфера. В Толстовском садике детям не только дают знания, но и учат важнейшим жизненным вещам: дружбе, взаимопомощи, умению договариваться, делиться, уважать друг друга. Всё то, что необходимо, чтобы вырасти не только умным, но и добрым, душевным человеком. Дети туда идут с радостью. А для родителей и бабушек-дедушек это, наверное, самое главное. Вера В.
(Engish translation) I truly believe there are very few kindergartens like this one — if any at all. Our grandson attended Tolstoy Kindergarten until he started school, and even now, as a schoolboy, he often asks if he can go back for a visit. That alone speaks volumes about how happy and comfortable he felt there. The professional and genuinely caring approach of the teachers is evident in everything — from the thoughtful attention they give each child to the well-rounded, play-based learning program that respects each child’s individuality. Every day felt like a little adventure, full of discovery, joy, and meaningful interaction. The food deserves special praise: freshly cooked meals made daily from natural ingredients, just like at home. Between meals, the children are offered fresh fruits and vegetables — a rare and wonderful touch. But most importantly, the atmosphere in Tolstoy Kindergarten is truly unique. Children are not only taught basic preschool skills, but also the essential social tools they’ll need in life: how to make friends, resolve conflicts, cooperate, and treat others with kindness. These are lessons that matter far beyond the classroom. The children are happy there, and go in each morning with a smile. And for any parent or grandparent, that’s the greatest gift. Vera W.

This is an amazing day care! We feel overjoyed that our child has been going to Tolstoy for almost a year now and it’s been a wonderful experience for her. Here are some key highlights regarding why we feel that this is THE TOP place for an Eastern European child in the DC area: 1) We initially looked at another well-known kindergarten in VA, but chose Tolstoy due to its cozier, warmer, and more personalized atmosphere. The class size is much smaller, the teachers more attentive and just overall it feels more like a 2nd home rather than an impersonal institution 2) The curriculum is super strong. Literally every day the children bring home things they painted and/or crafts they made, there is a theater class, yoga, English lessons, math, etc. In sum, this is not just a place where the child is “kept alive” and entertained, but the instructors go the extra mile to ensure active mental, social and physical development. And, yes, in the best Eastern European tradition, the children constantly learn new poems, which they then proudly show off by reciting at home. It’s just plain incredible 3) Not only is the food 100% home-cooked, but the staff is attentive to dietary preferences beyond just the usual food allergy part. For example, our child is given only plain yogurt without any added sugar per our request. There are also no processed snacks which somehow show up here in US even in daycare centers that claim to have “healthy” food… 4) Yes, this is a Russian-speaking daycare, but there is no political emphasis on Russia is a country. The children and staff members are from all-around the region: Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, etc. It’s a perfect place to preserve their native language with zero indoctrination.  Dmitri F.

Моя дочь посещала этот русскоязычный детский сад в течение двух лет, и мы по-настоящему счастливы, что оказались именно здесь. В саду царит уютная, почти домашняя атмосфера, где каждому ребёнку уделяется внимание и забота. С детьми не просто проводят время — с ними занимаются, развивают их, приучают к хорошим манерам и уважению друг к другу. Дети там спят днём в пижамках и собственных кроватках — это создаёт ощущение дома и уюта. Отдельно хочется отметить питание — детей кормят вкусной, домашней едой, что для нас было одним из ключевых моментов при выборе сада. За всё время я ни разу не пожалела о своём решении. Педагоги здесь — добрые, чуткие и внимательные. Чувствуется, что они действительно любят детей и вкладывают в них душу. ИЗамечательный Садик! Дети окружены заботой и вниманием. Восхитительные воспитатели! Вкусное домашнее питание, уроки йоги, театра и рисования. У нас оба ребенка ходили в Садик, и он для них был как второй дом. We’ve been moving around for the past 7 years and have had to change daycares every year. Out of all the places we’ve been, Tolstoy Preschool has been by far the best experience we’ve had.
From the moment you walk in, it feels like stepping into a loving grandmother’s home-warm, comforting, and full of joy. The teachers and the environment are so welcoming that my son instantly felt at ease and stayed downstairs playing with the other kids while we spoke with teachers.
Tolstoy quickly became a second home for him. The home-cooked meals were such a treat-it gave us real peace of mind knowing he was eating nutritious, lovingly prepared food. No processed snacks, no packaged treats like you often see in U.S. daycares. He even started eating soups!
What truly sets this daycare apart are the thoughtful touches that make each day special. The staff genuinely care for each child as if they were their own. The dance, music, and theater programs are beautifully designed to nurture creativity and build confidence. The kids also get plenty of outdoor playtime, filled with imagination and exploration.
We’re incredibly grateful to have found Tolstoy and feel truly blessed by every teacher our son had there. The perfect blend of warmth, care, meaningful activities, and a true sense of family is something rare to find.
